I thought at first that it might be a glitch in how the game processes renegotiations, but that player shouldn't have been able to renegotiate a contract he signed on that same year. It seems more like a ploy the GM used to bring down the players cap number at little risk. Release him and make him a new offer on the same stage, before anyone even knows he's available.
It's a major hole that should be addressed before I go and do the same with my high-priced recent FA signings! |

I think there is a glitch in the way it is displayed which is making it look worse than it actually is. That owner was releasing and re-signing players at the end of the season during the playoffs starting at the wild card stage (before people were paying attention to FA signings) due to cap issues. That TE's contract wasn't renegotiated, he was cut and resigned. He has $52 mil in dead cap for this season. I think we are missing the 'Midweek' designation during those weeks so it looks like it was done in one sim. I have a player pending cut right now, and there is no way for me to make an offer while he is still pending cut. So you can't really cut and resign in the same sim.

In that case, maybe the issue is the ability to sign a player to a long-term contract during the season. It's not difficult for even a major cut to go unnoticed once the season begins. Maybe multi-year contracts should be limited to the offseason.

I see where you are coming from, but I don't think I necessarily share that viewpoint. If I know I have one of my bigger contracts up this year or next, I personally want to be able to renegotiate contracts whenever I choose. This could also affect how trades are done if I need to renegotiate a contract to make room for someone else.
The risk really falls on that owner 'hoping' no one else sees what they are doing, like in this case. He dropped and resigned some big talent that wish I would have seen as well (I didn't notice until the 'end of season' week). That really is on us as owners to check the waiver wire after each sim in my opinion. |

Renegotiate, yes. But I mean sign off the street to a multi-year deal.

So single season contracts only during the regular season?

In my opinion, yes. There's no way you could something like this in the NFL, for example.

Interesting idea. I'm not opposed to limiting season contracts to 1-year deals - anyone else want to comment on this thought?

BTW, I think you're right about those happening in the midweek and game stages, the midweek stages don't say "midweek" in the transaction log during the playoffs. I should probably see if I can fix that.
