Jacksonville extended its undefeated start to the 2078 regular season with a 32-20 win over Houston at home on September 18. The Jaguars, coached by Jack Wolf, improved to 3-0 and retained first place in their division, while the Texans remained winless at 0-3.

Jacksonville jumped out to an early lead when quarterback Jerome Vela ran 12 yards for a touchdown just over eight minutes into the first quarter. The Jaguars converted the extra point to go up 7-0. Vela showed versatility throughout the game, totaling 221 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, 50 rushing yards, and one additional rushing touchdown.

Defensive pressure was a key factor, with Jacksonville recording eight sacks. Defensive lineman Matthew Dragoo delivered a pivotal sack in the second quarter that resulted in a safety, adding two points to Jacksonville’s advantage and increasing the lead to 9-0 against Houston’s quarterback, William Akins.

Though Houston managed a field goal just before halftime to narrow the gap to 9-3, Jacksonville responded early in the third quarter with a 35-yard field goal by Thomas McFarland, extending the lead to 12-3. Shortly after, Vela connected with fullback John Gross on a 7-yard touchdown pass, pushing the score to 19-3.

The Jaguars’ rushing attack was effective, led by Christopher Tyson who gained 87 yards on the ground, and John Johnson who contributed a rushing touchdown along with 44 receiving yards. Wide receiver Paul Hollis was a standout with 119 receiving yards and one rushing touchdown.

Houston’s offense tallied 296 passing yards and two passing touchdowns by Akins, who also rushed for 16 yards but threw one interception. Tight end Anthony Ulrich recorded 110 receiving yards with a rushing touchdown, while wide receiver Marcus Barron added 97 receiving yards and a rushing touchdown. However, Houston’s rushing attack was limited to 28 yards on 15 carries.

The Texans faced challenges throughout, including an early turnover when William Akins’ pass was intercepted by Jacksonville’s Richard Francisco in the third quarter. Francisco returned the interception 11 yards, setting up favorable field position for the Jaguars.

Jacksonville’s special teams also played a role, with punter Robert Williams frequently pinning Houston deep in their own territory, including a 52-yard punt in the second quarter that resulted in a touchback near Houston’s goal line.

Despite Houston’s efforts to rally late, Jacksonville controlled the game tempo and capitalized on critical defensive plays. Head Coach Jack Wolf’s squad maintained a perfect record and a stronghold on their division.

The Jaguars will look to continue their winning streak as they pursue a successful campaign, while Houston aims to bounce back from their third consecutive loss.
