Re: How does the game handle “over the cap”?

New owner in one of my leagues just singed multiple big contract free agents in weeks 1&2 of free agency. Currently is over the cap by $89 million with only 46 contract players and still has 3 days of FA and the draft. I dont see how an owner can cut $89 mil of contacts in a year without also increasing dead cap, which will make it worse.
How does the game handle this? He appears to be a new owner, so I don’t think he’s being deliberate abusive of the rules. I’m just wondering how he gets out of this and if the game will auto adjust contracts and “save” this team/owner. Which ultimately isn’t fair to people who manage their team correctly.

The AI will cut players ordered by the players with the highest 'save if release' value until you are under the cap. If you are still over the cap with zero players on your roster (which can happen if you have enough dead cap), the game will forgive dead cap enough so you can sign enough players to field a minimum team at minimum salary.

Thanks! Where is the “save if release” value? I could not find that on my team

If you go to your roster page, there is a drop down. If you select the contracts option it will be there.

Thanks. I’m dumb. I was thinking this was a setting we could control, not staring me in the face every time I’m on that page!

Yesterday my original concern about this team/owner looked like this:(I took a screen shot thinking I could upload it, but it won't let me insert it)
Total Cap: $249,471,139
Dead Cap: $46,427,139
Room Under Cap: -$89,445,919
Need for Draft Picks: $28,929,774
Cap used next year: $298,235,612
Dead Cap used next year: $20,379,408

Today, no players have been released. No new ones signed(Day 3 FA ran overnight). Team is no longer over the cap, and has just enough salary cap money left to sign their draft picks. If you look at the transactions, no players were released to account for this sudden $89 million savings...the overspent cap money just disappeared. This is not consistent with the process that was explained by league admin in 1st reply to this orginal post.
Punisher has also posted that same owner has done something similar with Washington in MFN 1. Clearly this owner is gaming the system.

I will investigate to see if there might be a bug in the logic.
