Re: Too many kicks returned for TD

Hey Guys,

I don't know about you but i really feel like there are too many TD's on Punts and Kick offs ... anyway those numbers are way unrealistic and those TD's on special team play have a larger impact than in real life on the outcome of games (i know this is a game, but it's a simulation... so it should try to be as accurate as possible.) I'm not criticizing or anything, i also have beneficiated of a large amount of points created by my special team players in each of my teams on MFN, but i really think something should be done to bring the numbers down a bit, so it's more realistic. And the reason i think is at the root of the problem, is the impact of pure speed on special team play. In both my leagues i put rookies as returners, both with 95+ speed ( One is a CB, the other is a WR) but neither with good break tackle stats... and they already have 9 TD's combined (One has 6... 3 on KR, 3 on PR)

To make sure we all get an idea of what i'm talking about... here are the numbers :

TD on Punt Returns in the NFL (2014) : 13 (the most by one player was 2)
TD on Kick off Returns in the NFL (2014): 6 (The most by one player was 1)

TD on Kick off Returns in MFN 11 (through 12 weeks) : 32 (The most by one player is 7)
TD on Punt Returns in MFN 11 (through 12 weeks) : 37 (The most by one player is 8)

In my last game alone :
500 + return Yds and 3 TD....

So what do you guys make of all this...
i insist, i'm not criticizing or being negative... just want to see if other players think that this special team play is kind of over the top....

I think some (not all) of this is due to the players on the coverage teams.

For some of my teams I have put defensive starters on the coverage teams, and I don't give up many returns.

I don't think that is the cause of all of this. There are a lot.

However, I don't want to see anything done to take away from an offensive (return) player's ability. I'd rather see the defensive abilities improved.

Right now I think it's pretty clear that the offenses dominate in MFN. I think the effect good defensive players have on the game needs to be increased instead of decreasing the effect of good offensive players.

I do agree with you.... Defense should be improved in any way possible to get more balance with the offensive firepower in the game.
But for the defensive starters on special team.... i'm not really sure it works, cause i've done it already, Prior to my game against Dallas, since i noticed he has this great returner i put some of my best / Fastest players on ST... i still got torched for 2 TD.

I do think you're right, this is one of those balance things that the pendulum is a bit too far in the returner's favor. It wasn't that long ago that the returns were lucky to get back to the 20, we improved kick returning blocking and that has helped a lot - we see a lot of good coverage mixed with long returns - but the long returns are too extreme now. The next place we'll look at is probably the coverage team which I do think has a tendency to get out of position with the current pursuit algorithm.

I think one of the main issues is the edge support on ST defense, If you have a good speedy return man who can get to the edge while the majority of ST defenders are all bunched up the middle its causing a lot of these returns. I think this is more of defenders not playing within their own lanes going down the field

i let my coaches set the special teams, i only set the returner himself and i rarely give up a TD yet i score them.

Experience seems to be a factor in the game. Applying it on ST's is very effective as applying it anywhere here does benefit your team. But, I want to play reserves on certian ST's plays. Learning certian ST's postions is quite easy IRL. Perhaps the rate of experience gained could be increased to have guys pick it up the ST postion quicker than say QB for example. Cause in my eyes there are Steve Taskers out there, but more often than not when I play back ups its a one on one with either my kicker or punter and thier return guy.

As a rookie here I have yet to see this I've had one returned against me.

However I have notice something that may be a contributing factor. On a couple of the teams I took over it looks like the previous owner was using DTs as gunners. Perhaps a tweek to the standard gunner weights would be quick and easy adjustment.

Just a thought.............

Yeah, as of now player weight is not factored into ST ratings, which may need to be tweaked.
