End of season analysis - HELP!

By jhartshorn

Just trying to analyse the end of season data for first time which is fab!
I noticed my weak area was letting too many pass atts/completions/yards - this suggests to me that I'm not getting my defense into the pocket to sack the Qb....right?!
However, when I looked on the Player stats for whole league, I have one player inside top 10 for sacks this seaosn and the other about 25th - they've made about 50 between them this season. Yes that only just equals the mighty guy at Seattle who has 50 himself but seems decent.

Also when I looked at Tackles I have two players who look ok stats-wise.

Any thoughts before we hit the new draft would be appreciated as ever!

sometimes stats can be overrated. Like tackle stats for dbs. If you're getting a lot of tackles that means you're giving up a lot of catches. THe stat that would be huge would be hurries on the QB or tackles for loss. Sacks are big but if you are gettin off the field pretty quick your dline wont have as many opportunities. When i look at a defense i like to look at Points Against and rushing yards against. When you look at your dbs look at knockdowns and catches allowed. I like my dbs to be around 30% catch allowed.

I have serious doubts about the accuracy of the catch allowed stat in this game.

Noting your playoff loss last season against seattle i noticed one glaring thing.

This might cause what you are saying. The pass and run tendencies and how to match your opponents play.

Pass key with blitz or multipule blitzes. He got you there on a few occasions.

I saw perhaps a pass key here and there on 3rd down from you. I call that a passive play despite an agressive play call.

Combine the two and your D will do well if you guess your opponents tendencies correctly.

When teams with alot of talent square off. This is the difference. If you applied this with the correct amount of aggressiveness at the right time then domination will be right around the corner.

what do these abbreviations mean under the defense stat :

thrnat = number of time thrown at? ??
yards = number of yards they ran with the ball or allowed receiver to run past them?

If you get a sack on 1st and 2nd down then give up a bomb on 3rd then those sacks do not mean you had a successful set of downs. The more your defense is on the field the more likely they are to put up stats. Now there is a serious lacking stat... Number of plays ran against (team for the season). Sacks are good but if you aren't getting off the field on 3rd down they won't end up meaning much.

Hi ray hope you're well - thanks for reply.
do you mean: "I passed on 3rd down and he blitzed me"?
if so I realise now that I shouldn't have passed then - that right?
I think next season I'll look at the opponents key strengths and key weaknesses and try to counter them better.
I've been reading my beginners guide to American football (on page 167 sofar! ) this month and have picked up a few tips about when to do different things etc. so I'm looking fwd to trying them next season :)
