Speed

Question for JDB: Can you help me better understand how one player's speed rating compares to another's? We've talked before about the merits of posting 40 times, which I think could help.

I had a 73 speed RB look like Barry Sanders: https://mfn1.myfootballnow.com/watch/11988#2234822

Here, a 91 speed CB can't close a 5-yard gap on a 77 speed WR (with 100 ball carry) over the course of 60 yards: https://mfn1.myfootballnow.com/watch/11988#2234847

Is this 77 speed TE (257 pounds) nearly as fast as this 79 speed CB (191 pounds)?

There are a couple of possible reasons - speed and acceleration are used together, if acceleration is low a player may not get to their max speed. Also, fatigue reduces speed, so a slower player who is fresh may be able to outrun a faster player who is fatigued. Conditioning comes into play here quite a bit. So, speed of each player can be quite volatile throughout a game.

Fatigue aside, I still think it would be helpful to know how one player compares to another.

It's difficult for me to guess the impact of fatigue in this game. My slow RB was a backup who entered 100% fresh and played just 31 snaps. The speedy CB played 50 snaps compared to 29 for the WR.

Ball carry = 99 and it's a Nickel coverage play allowing running space + a play which used to get decimated but is showing life now.

----

That 77 WR play = 100 ball carry + paying the price. Nickel Normal CB3 MLB Blitz - Pass Key. It went over the top on a non-zone play; a once dominating blitz which one gets zapped on now from time to time.

The other stuff is technical 40 dash times and I bow out on that. :) TE to CB comparison.

Can we get confirmation that ball carry makes a player faster than he really is?

As I understand it, ball carry will slow a player down ie 100 ball carry = a very minor or no effect to top speed, a 50 ball carry slows a player down drastically.

so a speedy WR with low ball carry can burn past a slower DB, adjust to make the catch (pass catching) accelerate if not tackled but then be run down by a slower receiver as he is conscious of protecting the ball and/or looking over his shoulder to see what direction the defenders are coming from.

So high accel, high speed, high pass catch, high pass courage, high ball carry all go towards a Julio Jones type WR

RB's need high ball carry skills as otherwise any speed/acceleration is mitigated. Plus low ball carry skills combined with low avoid fumble is a disaster waiting to happen. No matter how fast he is!

EDIT: But the above is merely my opinion and not necessarily those of the MFN Owners ;o)

I get that bad ball carry may slow a guy down. I don't understand how a slow guy with high ball carry can outrun a fast guy.

Fatigue.

Lets say the high acceleration, 71 speed guy is used selectively but the DB is out there a lot. The used briefly RB gets the burst. JDB touched on it.

But, yeah, that's all it could be: high usage DB against a barely out there, used sparingly slower speed RB.

Fatigue I get, even if it's difficult to qualify. Your previous comment suggests that ball carry is amplifying speed.

I believe if ball carry is pinned to 100 or 90+ it aids in their explosion.

Little in USFL....rather slow (71 speed, I think) and I got some production out of him due to ball carry.

Not a great example as I see he doesn't hit for big gainers but I got him to produce yards:

Also, it's huge in the break away fly routes and/or the open space...the 100 ball carry guy will zip line whereas lets say I have a 95 speed, lower ball carry Nicholas Rodriguez in the Legends league. He'll get tracked down.

4.5 and 3.8 ypc past 2 seasons.
