https://mfn1.myfootballnow.com/watch/10511#1918753Both plays were not overused, but this was later in the game. The FB was the primary but the wr2 was the target . The zone was designed to cover the depper middle of the feild and the offensive play was designed to expose the outside , but for some reason the qb made the read to the inside into triple coverage . The fb didn't get into his route and the wr1 was wide open....why read the wr2 here?
In general this is how I see outside reads...they just aren't there at the right times. The fb would have been a good option too if the qb waited another second . It's kinda like qbs read the inside of the feild first , then go outside but never check the inside again.
If you keep inside reads short the outside does have better chances to open up for a good second read, but sending your inside reads deeper won't always open up the middle for a later read. The qb will go outside to rbs and TEs here, but never back into the middle as a second read for a dragging wr.
I think the opposite happened here.... there were no short inside reads early in the play and the qb just rushed a throw back the other way to the wr2. Why read the fb then the wr1? At least they are in the same direction . ..and open. Did he need more time?, because by then the wr1 could be covered and the FB would have been open .
If qbs ran and made good throws I think the offense would be over powered cause a lot of passes are in tight windows . What ever the result is... a catch over , knockdowns , or int
