Re: Newbie, enjoy the game...

I'm a newbie here, and to this type of game. I like it. I can see how I will be building my team through practices and drafts. And I finally read all of the developer blog posts, so I'm up on how to use the systems.

What isn't working are the trades, I've found so far. I have attempted about 40 trades, with 9 teams, four different leagues. Two persons were helpful in that they did trade, and me being new I do expect to take the loss in trades as I get known, but I took bad losses, draft 1 and 2 for a low 80 player, draft 1 and 3 for a 70 rated player. But I did them and will see if there are any friendships to be had in the future.

Most people were like, are you trying to take advantage of me, I'm not that stupid.. etc. when I'd do my usual offer of; I wanted an 80 player, I'd offer 1 high draft pick (1 or 2) and an upper 70 player of which I saw they had a need at that position. Usually when I'd choose a higher rating player, 80's or higher, it was because I could see they had an even higher rated player for starter.

I figure you want competition and wouldn't mind helping a newcomer out to build a team right away. What I'm finding is that I'm expected to lose all of the games in the first season, build myself through the draft and trade stingily, probably being willing to trade an upper 70 player which is developed past 50, for picks 1 and 2.

The only reason I'm making this post, is to inform you all, and maybe the developer that you are not going to keep people playing in these leagues as long as this is the norm in how they're handled as newcomers.

I'm tacomachuck, cboyer1951,funlunchuck, kennewickchuck, you can either join my attitude and trade with me, or mark me as someone to stear clear of or dislike, I don't care. But I do care for the game. This is fun already and I can see how after 2 or 3 seasons I'll probably be building a competitive team by then. (I picked up that a season is like 3 months long??? whoaaa).

I'll also be not using over half of my accounts and let those fall off. From the forums I learned that I'll probably be keeping the Cust League teams and let the MFN's go, as the CUST have the more stable members who stick around. Cust33/Brooklyn, and Cust29 South Boston are the one's I'll keep active.

I can see the things that will take me awhile to learn are going to be the Scouting, and Training functions. Purchasing FA's and Coaches seem to be pretty straight forward.
For those who have traded with me and fairly, thank you, I don't mean to leave you out of this discussion. There have been a few. But by far the majority are those who are not willing to trade, even when it's just for a 2nd player in the same position (C for instance), which says to me I guess that they're looking out for a possible injury and having the backup being at close to the same level as their starter. Shrugs. :) And by the way, if I've got this all wrong, and your experiences have been totally different, I'm willing to shut up and listen and to learn something, always.

Thank you for the game, developer.
Chuck

Trading is a little hard in some leagues because of user inactivity and differing player weights. If you click on a users name it will show you when they last logged in, I use this to help me find a trade partner. Also, you get to choose how you value attributes for each position, so a 70 to you might be an 80 to that person or vice versa. Lastly, and I wouldn't expect you to have known this, is that most first round draftees have a future rating of mid 70s, so offering a first rounder is similar to offering a 40/75 player.

I hope that is helpful, and this is coming from someone who enjoys trying to trade and has felt some of your frustrations. Most users on the site are very friendly or have been to me since I joined. Try joining a new league that hasn't done their allocation draft yet and build a team from scratch. I really like the MFN leagues. They do have a lot of turn over, but you build some good rivalries with the teams that stay.

Best of luck!

I wouldnt even accept a lopsided trade in my favor, but thats just me. I have turned down offers or countered with better deals for the other owner.

You ever need help with anything I have no problem with helping. A few other owners have asked questions from me and I have had np in giving answers.

Yeah, be very careful trading those first round picks and if you do make sure the player isnt old or in decline. Do a little research on the player and see if he may even have a higher value at another position. Just go to the team thats trading with you under search players and check a few other positions, like RDE might be better suited as a LDE and sometimes if he is smaller in weight might be a better LB.

Are you really complaining that people aren't accepting bad trades just to help you out? Haha. Everyone is trying to win here; you can't expect someone to just hand you their hard-earned talent.

As for trading, I can't speak for anyone else but I personally shy away from trading with any new users, as I wouldn't want to take advantage of someone due to their lack of experience and thus sour their (and others) experience. And trust me, coaching and team management goes a *long* way in this game, and you can accomplish a lot with a middling team if you're willing to put in the effort. Trading is fun, but until you have a better understanding of player value I'd suggest avoiding parting with any first round selections, and don't trade any of your top players without first shopping them around in your league forums first.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Was worth it just to get some responses. Again, the whole thing is so new to me, this type of play. I've played only those Facebook sims where the seasons are 24hours long, type of thing. Anyway...

Morbid: Thanks for that, a season only being a month and 1/2 is good, better than I expected at 3, don't know which thread I picked that misinformation up from. Thanks.

Ares:
Seriously? You wouldn't take a trade tipped heavily in your favor? Nodding, I see your point, and that's very valid. Anyone cares to answer this, would be appreciated in just exactly how and why you do trade then, please.
But for me, what I've done (not knowing squat of course) is just view the team listing of players there in the trade windows..., I look at the top portion only, first window and 1/2, not going below a high (77) rated player. I see, oh they have RDE, LDE, CB, SS, FS, MLF... TE, WR, etc. 'but' they have no QB until the one rated at 63. ... so my logic is I see they have 2 TE's, one at 83/95 and another at 55/80.. I have only one TE at 54. So I offer a QB at 73 (my other QB is only 82 or 79 so I'm keeping that), and I offer a 2016 Draft 1, 2 or 3, whatever the meter sets it at just in the other player's favor.

So what's wrong with that attitude? Just asking. And that's the way I attacked the situation for the first few days I've been here now.

However, after reading your excellent points of interest, Ares, and yours Morbid and Damean, I can see that there are far more elements at stake and at play in this game that I didn't have any idea about until you just brought them up here in this post. So,thanks a lot. Getting my edumacation here, right on the spot. And I like learning that way, where the rubber meets the road. Yeah. :)

Damean; 'Differing player weights'.. that's a lesson right there. Yeah,I just finally bumped into setting the player rates according to the coach yesterday, after reading it on the blog. Heavy stuff there. So I toyed around with setting up a very aggressive team in that section. "Then", I could understand what you're saying here. And it makes sense, of course my player would react different under my training staff selections than another coach and another team. So that affects how they 'view' other players stats too huh? Kind of set's their binoculars by that? Interesting, ... I had no idea. Excellent you brought it up though. Thanks. And I didn't know the relative rating of a new draftee, so good to know that too.
And yeah, I'll look around at each of my 9 teams more closely now. I do have 4 that I have done no trading at all in, so I have all of my future draft picks pristine and in place.

Morbid: I had no idea what I could look at of the other teams players, so all of that information is golden man to me... thanks a lot. Checking their players in different positions, I like that., I'll be looking for that after I answer this post. Wow. A lot to absorb here, guys.

But that sets up my last point, I was looking at this all wrong. I was kind of looking at the pot, watching for it to boil. And come to find that there are so many deeper layers of how to handle my team, how to look at it differently because of those points. I'll get digging and keep busy setting things up and after a few games I'll notice that my team's boiling already! Ha! :) But, metaphors aside. Point is, wow was I incredibly naieve and stupid in how I was looking at all of this. Got a lot more to learn. Wow. But I'm up for it.

There's so many variables I see now. Do I want to focus on a running or passing team, or balanced? Do I want man to man or zone, or a little of both., ..... lots of things I can set. Plus scouting the upcoming team I play? Whoaaaa... Honestly, I'll plug along, but I really think it'll be quite a few months before I get the hang of this game and the dynamics enough to really be making much of a difference on my team. Whew.. :)

Thanks again for replies. Good ones.

This has been an issue in the past where some owners have 'taken advantage' of green owners. If some owners want to do that, then that is their prerogative. But most here will reject lop-sided offers in their favor until that new owner has been here a while and gets a feel for the game.
Best of luck with your team :)

Thanks, Gustoon.
I know the feeling, for two I did trade with, I got a few high 70's and 2 80's, but noticed afterwards that for 3 years I had no picks above 4. And I did have a kind of 'used' feeling because of that. What I felt is that they let me have a couple of wins this season, but insured that I was going to experience no growth for 3 years, so I wouldn't be competition.
So, I do see what you mean. It left me scrambling to drop those two teams and want to only use the teams where I had all first 3 picks, so that I could get the full feel of the game and experience fresh drafts in my player pool. I had a draft immediately and noticed that I wasn't getting any players that I earmarked to draft, of course being 4th,5th,6th and 7th in each round I was sure to get only the lowest numbers.

By the way, I did make a mess with too many teams, is there a way to request and have removed 7 of the 9 teams that I now have? I won't be able to manage more than 2 in my first year or so here.

If they are custom teams, I'm not sure, but the regular teams just ride out the season, you don't have to gameplan or anything. I had a team last season that got screwed up as I missed the whole draft, (got called away).
Up until last night we have been without wifi for the last 2 weeks and have had another 46 round draft fall by the wayside as doing it on a phone is just hellish, although I did try. So hopefully I'll get released from that league soon.

Why do you have more than one account name?
